He knew this was the perfect place to build a city, and so he founded Byzantium, which would later become Constantinople and then Istanbul.

Emperor Constantine XI Dragases was the last reigning Byzantine Emperor, ruling from 1449 to 1453. He was born in 1404 to Emperor John VIII Palaiologos and his second wife, Sophia of Serbia. Constantine was raised in a time of great turmoil for the Byzantine Empire, as it faced constant threats from the Ottoman Turks, who were rapidly expanding their territory in the Balkans.
